Canada’s Little Mosque on the Prairie?!

OTTAWA, (AFP) – Canada’s public broadcaster CBC hopes to lighten religious tensions between this country’s Christian majority and Muslims with a new sitcom, “Little Mosque on the Prairie.”

The show is a parody of the acclaimed US drama “Little House on the Prairie” (1974-1983), starring Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert, about the life and adventures of the Ingalls family in the 19th century American West.

But instead of raising pitchforks, tumbling down hills and selling eggs at the general store, this fictional Muslim family struggles to find its place in Canada’s vast western prairies in a post-September 11, 2001 world.

CBC spokesman Jeff Keay said Monday the broadcaster has ordered eight episodes and will begin airing them in January.

Anybody care to place a bet on how many of those episodes will air before it gets yanked for being offensive to Muslims? I’m astounded they’re even filming the show, and I hope I’m wrong about what the reaction will be.

Christian Women Wearing Headscarves

However, a small but seemingly growing number of women are adopting the garb of earlier times — form-concealing clothing and hair coverings that range from bun covers to Little House on the Prairie-type bonnets — in a movement fueled by the most modern of technologies, the Web. [...]

Many quote the Bible, specifically the Apostle Paul’s admonition in 1 Corinthians 11:5: But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head.

For Wendy McDonnell of Lebec, Calif., who owns wendysmodestdress.com, covering her hair represents a way of separating from modern society. “It all kind of goes hand-in-hand. The modesty. The home schooling. The home churching. Covering. Looking for the off-the-grid lifestyle. It’s part of a huge movement.”

Ummm… riiight…. listen, I’m all in favor of modest dress. Why would we dress provocatively and encourage our brothers to sin? What does dressing in a way that showcases our physical attributes indicate about us spiritually? Homeschooling, obviously I’m in favor of; we homeschool The Daughter Of The House and it’s worked out really well. (We’re in our third year.) The “WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?” sidebar on this article is very interesting, and features opinions from several sources including Wayne Grudem. Regardless of any theological reason – or lack of reason – for this trend, it creeps me out to think of Christian women wearing a variation of the hijab.

In the “this creeps me out” department – WaPo is tracking congressional votes by astrological sign?! What on earth are these people thinking?!

  1. Um, I have to say, Canadians have a GREAT sense of humour… (SNL… most of the US comedy-writing teams include Canadians…) & so, too, do Muslims.
if you can’t LAUGH, then you’re bottling up & harbouring resentments…

This show? is gonna be… about Americans & North American culture.

    have you seen the Trailers?
If you don’t TALK, all we get is REGIONALISM & cultural divides.

Americans expect EVERYONE to act the way Americans do… that’s why you’re screwed.

Canada tries to live as less a ‘melting pot’ & more as a ‘salad’ where everyone is DISTINCT, yet GETS ALONG.

we try. but that takes more than Fox News sociology.

BlueBerry, you misinterpreted what I wrote about the show – I don’t disapprove of it. I wrote “Anybody care to place a bet on how many of those episodes will air before it gets yanked for being offensive to Muslims? I’m astounded they’re even filming the show, and I hope I’m wrong about what the reaction will be.”

After the cartoon riots and the flap about a very mild statement by the Pope, and the dhimmi outlook that seems to be spreading in the name of “islamophobia” I expected the show to be canceled post-haste. Personally, I hope it stays on. No religion should be free of parody.

The title of this post was intended to indicate a roundup of weird crap I stumbled across on the internet, that’s all.

As for the Fox News sociology – please! Fox is no more entrenched in it’s conservative perspective than CNN, MSNBC, and the rest are in their liberal views. I notice you link to Media Matters, and their point of view is clear. Do you also read Honest Reporting and Media Research Center for balance? If you don’t, you’re not getting the full story on the MSM.
