Treacher notes that what he’s now calling the Deathbed Media is trying to whip people up into a new hysteria – those eeevil Rethuglicans are gonna get ya! Of course, all the thuggery seems to be coming from the other side, up to and including Molotov cocktails. More projection from the left.
Seriously, if Obama does lose this thing, does anyone think there won’t be riots?
Slublog has some interesting comments on the history of the press and notes something that I think a lot of us have forgotten: journalism is one of the few jobs protected by the Constitution.
I do disagree with Slu on one thing – I don’t think Walter Cronkite “for the most part” kept his politics separate from his profession. He did everything he could to help us lose Vietnam. And I think there’s a case to be made that his actions were the beginning of the end of modern journalism.

I still recall the night during the TET offensive, in which, I am told, the U.S. prevailed, when Cronkite raised an eyebrow signifying American defeat. That is burned in my memory. All of these anti war types may be honest and earnest. But, we have to remember that Osama Bin Laden and his cohorts probably have satellite TV in their caves and Obama, and all the left are playing to that audience as well as to Americans.
Cronkite’s speech convincing people to throw in the towel on the war is on YouTube. It’s infuriating, knowing what we know now, but doesn’t even compare to what passes for “news” these days.
