Apropos of Nothing

homepagetalkradioI really HATE the faux-Christian theme song for the Shaun Hannity radio show.  The song in it’s entirety is about an abused wife who evidently took matters into her own hands.    I devoutly wish it was an analogous call to action for conservatives to rise up against the GOP, but that’s not how he means it.   Hannity plays just the chorus. Often.  It’s chock full of Christian imagery, so much so that it cannot be a coincidence. And it’s all wrong, wrong, wrong:

Let freedom ring
Let the white dove sing [Doves do not sing.]
Let the whole world know that today is the day of a reckoning
Let the weak be strong
Let the right be wrong
[that's just stupid]
Roll the stone away [what does the resurrection have to do with this? but since you brought up the resurrection... ]
Let the guilty pay [the whole point of Jesus' death and resurrection was that the guilty would NOT pay]
It’s Independence Day [Jesus didn't die for us so we could be independent.  Christians are dependent on God]

I know it’s stupid to be so annoyed by song lyrics but these drive me right up a wall with the faux-Christianity.  Shaun Hannity gets on my nerves anyway, with that idiotic “Conservative Underground” nonsense.  It’s hardly underground and I really do take offense at comparisons to other “undergrounds” like the Christian underground in China, the Underground Railroad, the French Resistance in WWII, etc.   The whole concept of an “underground” implies actual danger.  We are hardly to that point in this country.  We’re not even close.  And all of this “you’re a great American” back-patting.    I didn’t think anything could be worse than Rush’s “dittoheads” but this is actually worse.  Seriously, just shut up, people.  You’re beclowning yourselves.

Hannity can be entertaining at times, and frequently has a good point to make.  But this nonsense makes it nearly intolerable to listen to the show.  The Hannity show follows Rush, and if I happen to have the radio on when Rush ends, I usually just turn it off rather than be subjected to Hannity’s theme song and the rest.  Silence is actually preferable. I can’t be the only person who reacts this way… can I?

(This concludes the unhinged rant o’ the day.)

Man, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed!

I think the song is actually more about Judgment Day than Easter, despite the “stone rolled away” reference. Of course, the dead and living will be resurrected on Judgment Day. But I think “Let the right be wrong” is simply an incitement to rebellion. In the music video, the little girl burns her house down to escape her father’s abuse. Likewise, revolution is normally wrong, but extreme tyrannies can justify extreme measures — as on Independence Day!

Laura, you’re not crazy. I have thought the exact same about this line:

    “Let the right be wrong”

That’s just crazy talk. What a stupid song.

Before I started blogging, I would listen to Medved, Prager and Levin. Sometimes Hewitt, not as much after that Harriet Miers fiasco.

Wintery Knight´s last blog post..Robert P. Murphy explains why he is public about his faith

I was cranky when I wrote that (last night.) And I’m even crankier now – I spent the day teaching a class. Suffice to say I’m taking my sore feet and legs, and bad attitude, along with a glass of wine, into the hot tub.

    Hey Laura,

I couldn’t find anything else on the Rick Monday flag incident. I thought about what you had said and tried to think about why this guy didn’t burn something else if he wasn’t trying to make a political statement about the USA. The only thing I could come up with is that people in distress don’t always act rationally. I just don’t see why he would commit such an extreme act and then not deliver some type of political statement about it if that were his intention. Also, I would imagine that the police would have commented in some way if they didn’t find his story credible (as insane as it all sounds). Again, I have no way of verifying that this was the truth. But if this guy were truly a political animal, considering the infamy of this act, I would think he would have been heard from again. But who knows? Your post got me thinking. Best, ML
