NEW ORLEANS — The Army Corps of Engineers, rushing to meet President Bush’s promise to protect New Orleans by the start of the 2006 hurricane season, installed defective flood-control pumps last year despite warnings from its own expert that the equipment would fail during a storm, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.
They would have worked, says Col. Jeffrey Bedey… we planned to fix it once the machinery was in place…
However, I think this quote is a great deal more illuminating:
“Let me give you the scenario: You have four months to build something that nobody has ever built before, and if you don’t, the city floods and the Corps, which already has a black eye, could basically be dissolved. How many people would put up with a second flooding?” said Randy Persica, the Corps’ resident engineer for New Orleans’ three major drainage canals.
As always with the Corps, job protection, not flood protection, seems to be Job One. I think the question that should be asked is, how many people would put up with being lied to AGAIN?
Even diehard Blanco supporters are now saying that she must go. But this particular item is not her fault, and she should not be blamed for it. She’s called for a congressional investigation and I think it’s a great idea, IF the Democrats can stay on topic – the Corps repeated malfeasance and lies – and not use this as against their archnemesis,
Osama bin Laden President Bush. Yes, the pump manufacturer is politically “connected.” Every big manufacturer is politically connected. This guy happens to be connected to Republicans, including Jeb Bush. But not so well connected that the Bush Administration’s Justice Department is failing to sue it when it is warranted:
The U.S. Justice Department sued the company in 2002, accusing it of fraudulently helping Nigeria obtain $74 million in taxpayer-backed loans for overpriced and unnecessary water-pump equipment. The case has yet to be resolved.
I’m sick of the Corps. I’m starting to feel like a battered wife. This is just the latest in a long line of offenses. At this point, I would dearly love to see someone go to jail or at the very least lose their job. Whatever it takes, this has to stop.
