The other day, an interview with Elton John quoted him as saying that Jesus was a compassionate gay man. Now – probably after a stern lecture from his public relations people – he’s backpedaling furiously.
Well, let me clarify the situation first of all. It’s not actually in the interview in Parade magazine. Parade magazine did a kind of a sneaky thing and put it on their website that I said this. And I, I might have said this as part of the conversation during the interview. And the interviewer did a wonderful job. And I’m very, very happy with the article in Parade magazine. I think everybody’s individual faith is their own business, and I do believe in Jesus, and I believe that he was a compassionate person, and I see him as, from my point of view, and that’s just my point of view, and I’m not, as a compassionate gay person. Someone who was persecuted. Someone who forgave people. And, and that’s how I see him. He could have easily been Jeannie White, Ryan White’s mother, you know, who went through that awful thing. It’s just I identify in my mind as someone like that…
Everybody’s idea of faith is their own business. And I think as long as you do believe in someone wonderful, and someone who was such a great person as Jesus Christ, and someone who was compassionate and forgiving, then that’s all I’m saying. I’m not saying to everyone that he definitely was gay. That’s how I see him. That’s my idea of faith. Everyone has their own idea. If I offended anybody, I don’t see why they should be offended by it because I’m not saying that’s how he definitely was. And, you know, we each have our own idea of what religion should be and our faith should be. And I, I do believe in Jesus Christ, and I do believe he was a wonderful man. And that’s my view of him. And, and I don’t, I don’t really want to cause a controversy, and I didn’t know it was going to be a sidebar to an article that was a great article. And I think Parade have been a bit sneaky about that. But I can’t do anything about it, and I’m afraid I’m a bit of a lightning rod for these situations.
Again, we all have that tendency to remake God in our own image. We want Him to be like us, because then we’re relieved of the obligation to be like Him: holy. And we each do have our own opinion about this. What I would ask Elton John if I had the chance is: on what is your opinion of Jesus based? When you dig down and start analyzing your own beliefs, what is the source material that formed those beliefs? I am convinced that for most people – and reading these quotes, I certainly include Elton John in this group – it comes down to nothing but wishful thinking.

I, for one, hope that God is nothing like the person I would be without Him. I struggle with my shortcomings every day, and what a disappointment it would be to try to serve a God who is no better than the fallible, flawed person that I find myself to be. If that were true, he would be impotent instead of omnipotent and no more capable of saving me than I am capable of providing salvation for myself. Fortunately, I don’t have to worry about that because my God is so much bigger than me or Sir Elton!

Not that I think Jesus was gay. However, I have felt according to many of today’s male stereotypes that the Christian man can easily be considered “suspect” of being homosexual if not simply assumed to be homosexual. However, I believe most of today’s stereotypes wrongly assign many negative or worldly characteristics to men. Since homosexuals obviously don’t fit that stereotype they seem to parade many of the positive and Godly characteristics as part of their orientation.
No wonder that (by today’s standards) Elton John would think Jesus was a gay man. e.g. stereotypical “men” are not-compassionate, not emotional, and considered clueless regarding the feelings of others (or themselves) and Jesus was no stereotype.
Homosexuals are narcissistic to the extreme, caring only about their own pleasure and obssessed with how they are viewed. If an effeminate man seems compassionate, you’ll find he’s often doing it with an agenda of being noticed. Obviously NOTHING like Jesus, regardless of how sir elton wants to spin it.
