Ann Coulter is usually funnier – and not usually this insightful – but the analysis in her most recent column is brilliant. She gives about the clearest explanation I’ve heard yet about the real problems in the health care industry.
As a result, a young, healthy person has a choice of buying artificially expensive health insurance that, by law, covers a smorgasbord of medical services of no interest to him … or going uninsured.

No matter how costly or expensive the health insurance is , one should have insurance to cover all his/her diseases so that they don’t have to spend even more money when they are suffering from a disease. You never know when you are going to get ill.Prevention is always better than cure.
I’m a big believer in catastrophic coverage, but for day to day health care it’s actually much cheaper to pay the doctor directly. Also, people who are fully insulated from the costs of their health care (by premiums automatically deducted from their payroll) tend to use a great deal more health care than those who have to make reasoned decisions, like “this is probably a cold, and the OTC medicine worked fine last time – I think I’ll take that and wait a few days to see if I get better on my own before making an appt to see the doctor.”
