How I wish that there were someone in government who’d exercise a little common sense. But then, that wish is predicated upon the belief that we’re all working toward the same goal. We’re not. If we were, the ludicrous concept that taking legally owned guns away from law abiding Americans would be helpful in combating crime conducted with illegally owned guns by Mexican gangs, would never have been floated.
The logic, one assumes, goes like this: Mexican gangs like using fully-automatic weapons. For pretty much all intents and purposes, fully-automatic weapons are banned from private ownership in the US. However, since we must be seen as doing something, we’ll ban semi-automatic weapons that kinda sorta look like the illegal ones. Because the last thing we need in the midst of a major crime wave from another country is Americans exercising their right to keep and bear arms and lawfully defend themselves.
Just when we need to stand here, the government insists on doing something. The idea that Americans might exercise a little independence and be prepared to defend themselves from home invasions and kidnappings – both situations where the police can do nothing but react after the crime has been committed – seems intolerable. Nobody wants to live in the wild, wild, west. However, the wild west wasn’t. Crime per capita is MUCH higher now when hardly anyone is packing heat. Why, it’s almost as if it’s safer to be a criminal now than it was back then!
In the movie The American President, the brave liberal president, finally Standing Up For What’s Right against the slimy Republican, declared, “You cannot address crime prevention without getting rid of assault weapons and handguns. I consider them a threat to national security, and I will go door to door if I have to, but I’m gonna convince Americans that I’m right, and I’m gonna get the guns.” That’s been a liberal goal for a very long time, but the problem is that the left isn’t really interested in convincing anyone. One way or another, they intend to do it. Rahm Emmanuel was clear about his desire never to waste a crisis, and I don’t think they’ll let this one pass.

I”m beginning to think everyone should be issued a copy of “More Guns, Less Crime” at taxpayer expense (Hey, it’s stimulus, right?)
I need to issue myself one of those, ECM… looks like something I’d enjoy.
Have you checked out The Great New Orleans Gun Grab?
I have not, but my interest is now piqued.
It’s well done. A lot of these folks still haven’t gotten their guns back, and never will. Not to mention the fact that cops and National Guard were literally kicking open doors, going in heavily armed, and confiscating legally owned guns from American citizens. Video. And an interview with the author.
