The video we’ve all been waiting for… or not. But just to show how much interest people have in this, here’s a video some Chinese person ginned up illustrating what they think happened on the flight. No idea whether they are an outraged Kevin Smith fan or a frustrated traveler. No idea how close this is to reality.
I got several nastygrams over my post, Flying While Fat, and several other unpublishable comments. Both from overweight folks who were offended – and bizarrely, seemed to feel that the fact that I’m a Christian prohibits me from wanting not to be touched by strangers – and from angry travelers who indulged in some really childish taunts about weight. It really is possible to express the desire to have the full use of the seat you paid for without getting into the grammar school “fatso” insults and making moral (and irrelevant) judgments about the character of people who are overweight. A pox on both your houses for incivility!
i just went back to that thread for the first time since I commented, and I can only imagine what has ensued in light of my initial comment, so I apologizxe for any, additional, flack you received on my behalf.
That said, the simple fact is, some (a lot, actually) of people *need* to lose (a lot of) weight, period, and screaming at those of us that point it out isn’t going to change that. (And they need to lose it, if not for themselves, for their family and loved ones due to the horrific array of ills that accompany being obese.)
No worries. I thought your comment was very mild and inoffensive. What baffles me is the way that people seem to equate Christianity with voluntary victimhood. It’s as if, because I am a Christian, I am expected not to suffer for the sake of the gospel (because unbelievers think that’s stupid), but to tolerate all kinds of unrelated offenses without complaint or else I’m not a “real” Christian. Convenient, that!
I agree with you, Laura. Even as a Christian, I still pay my fair share for my personal 18 inches.
