I'm NOT excusing the theft, of course, but…

just asking a question… don’t priests still take a vow of poverty?   How’d a priest end up with hundreds of thousands of dollars that somebody could steal to begin with?

I’d be really interested in the answer to this as well!

Actually, now that I think about it, isn’t it possible he simply never spent any of the money he was paid as a priest down through the decades? I mean, priests are actually paid even if it’s only a pittance, right? That would, fairly easily, add up over a 50+ year career, plus interest, etc. (Unless, of course, priests are expected/required to give that money away if it accrues for too long.)

Priests aren’t required to take a vow of poverty. Monks do, and I think Friars, too– but not all Priests. (Short form: generally, members of an order take a vow of poverty; the priests that would be in charge of a parish or two aren’t required to do so.)

Info here that’s good, unverified info here

Priests are in charge of paying all their own taxes, providing their own transportation, food and clothing, and sometimes providing for their own housing; they are expected to behave as befits their station– so no flashy sports cars, designer outfits, etc.

The Father did work for over forty-five years– with careful investing, $500k is not that hard to manage, especially if you live simply and are trying to make sure you 1) won’t be a burden to anyone, 2) will have money to leave to good causes.

Thanks, Foxfier. Amazing that his own cousin did that – what a disgrace.
