Indentured Servants Reject the NHS

Okay, I get it! I have bad teeth!

BBC NEWS | Health | Young dentists ‘reject the NHS’:
The amount of private work dentists have been doing has been rising since the early 1990s due to dissatisfaction with NHS pay rates.

It’s probably also nice to be able to set your own hours and generally be free to work and charge as you please, without the government micromanaging your business.

Not everyone is entitled to free dental care in the UK, which is why they have the dreaded “two-tier” system.  And for those who are entitled, good luck -

Dentists are under pressure not to treat children as the NHS cannot afford to fund their care, a pressure group claims.

But there’s certainly a movement to make dental care “free” for everyone.

Almost half the adult population do not have access to an NHS dentist – but even those who do are still being stung by charges that can run into hundreds of pounds per visit.

Patients’ Association chairman Anthony Halperin, a former dentist, said last night: “The Government has never explained why we do not have to pay for medical treatment but we do have to pay for dental treatment.

“Why are teeth thought of as a different part of the body? It is a matter of finance.”

It baffles me that people can’t understand that when it’s “free,” it’s rationed. And when it’s “free,” providers eventually get sick of being treated like indentured* servants and opt out.

*Sorry, I just couldn’t resist the pun.
