In November, a new field manual will be released with strategies related to defeating insurgencies. This sort of thing is not written quickly or without adequate study, so it’s evidently something that they’ve been working on for some time. And the change is expected to be dramatic:
“The Army will use this manual to change its entire culture as it transitions to irregular warfare,” retired Gen. Jack Keane, a former acting Army chief staff, told the Times. “But the Army does not have nearly enough resources, particularly in terms of people, to meet its global responsibilities while making such a significant commitment to irregular warfare.”
I’m looking forward to reading it, and seeing how the new tactics will affect the few remaining provinces in Iraq that are still under our control.
