Regular readers of this blog will be surprised at the title of this post, but I mean it sincerely. John McCain deserves to lose this election. Why? Because he refuses to fight to win it.
This is crunch time. He will never have another chance to run for President. His rhetoric – and I believe it – states that the country will suffer immeasurably under an Obama presidency. We will suffer economically and also with substantial, long term losses to our freedom. When Joe Biden said, “the past is prologue,” I immediately thought about the serial thuggery of Obama’s campaign and supporters – from blatant attempts to rig the election in Ohio, to vandalism, physical intimidation and attacks on McCain supporters, repeated unfounded accusations of racism, and bald-faced lies about Sarah Palin. President Hopenchange will leave the country far more divided than it is even today – unless we finally enjoy the “peace” of submission and conservatism is finally beaten. (Until Atlas shrugs, which is inevitable… but could take many years of suffering to accomplish.)
The bailout bill has passed – whether that is a good thing or a bad one I couldn’t say. I believe this whole “crisis” is manufactured; as I wrote last week, this is the Democrat’s October surprise. I don’t mean that the economy wasn’t shaky, and suffering from serious problems. We’re up to our necks in debt, on both the consumer and national levels. The Fannie/Freddie problems were real – as John McCain and President Bush have been pointing out for some time. But these are conditions, not a crisis. Can anyone point out the actual cause of this “crisis” – what triggered Paulsen to suddenly go public with this huge, expensive emergency? So far, no one has identified the tipping point where these conditions suddenly became the most urgent matter in the nation. McCain knows the truth about our nation’s financial condition, and he knows how we got here. But he refuses to tell that truth, and instead has boarded the populist bandwagon.
And yet – McCain refuses to take the gloves off and win this thing. He refuses to fight the media, and he refuses to call out Obama and his supporters on their disgraceful conduct. Mr. Straight Talk has utterly failed to tell the truth about what’s going on, because to do so would require him to buck his “friends” in the media and in Congress and really be the maverick he has played at being all these years. His failure is profound, in this moment that even he agrees is a critical moment in our history – in a wartime election where the outcome literally means the difference between winning and losing not just an election but a generational war. I mean it when I say he deserves to lose.
Which is certainly not the same as saying I hope he loses, or that Obama deserves to win.

I agree.
He is just repeating his mistakes during the 2000 campaign.
Maybe he should just retire. He is hurting a lot of people since he won’t fight for his own campaign. He is hurting Gov. Palin because of that.
I’ve felt this way for some time. I’ve also noticed he fought harder with Republicans in the primaries then he fights with Obama. I haven’t figured out why that might be. Its not because Obama isn’t an easy target, as his background, associations, voting record, ethics, gaffes make him a goldmine.
Here are my choices for reasons why:
A) McCain may be afraid of being seen as racist for no particular reason.
( Some white guys have this disease)
B) McCain may be forgetful when dealing with the stress of a live one on one debate. (Doesn’t have to be senility, stress can take anyone down)
C) McCain may have skeletons about Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac that haven’t seen the light of day. (Maybe he’s been dating Barney Frank’s old Fannie Flame on the side)
D) McCain may not be as anxious to be President after undergoing the transformation that one’ s handlers may push you into as they seek to appeal to everyone. ( is it worth it?)
E) McCain is discouraged because 1/2 of the electorate are displaying outward signs of hatred. (Thin skin politician?)
F) All of the above
It’s been said that his problem is that he is truly a nice guy.
It appears that in politics nice guys finish last.
He’s just terribly deluded. His priorities are completely out of whack. He thinks Americans truly care about ending earmarks and establishing “bipartisanship” more than anything else. In reality, earmarks are somewhat of a minor issue (as Obama pointed out in the debate), and most Americans would rather accomplish their ideological goals than compromise them.
Today he pointed out that he wants to draft Al Gore to help him craft global warming legislation. (!)
His problem is that he is basically weak. He is the domestic equivalent of a Neville Chamberlain or Richard Nixon. We are in a war. But like you said, he doesn’t want to fight.
If he doesn’t want to fight, he oughta at least let Sarah Palin loose. At this point, things are getting desperate, and there seems little to lose.
After listening/watching McCain these many weeks, my opinion is that McCain really does not want to be president. I think has decided that he is much happier in the Senate being America’s “Beloved Maverick”. What other explanation can you give for his Zelig-like act of trying to become indistinguishable from Obama?
IMHO he is consciously or subconsciously trying to throw the election. It will be up to Sarah to do all the heavy lifting and drag McCain over the finish line. She is a strong woman, but that is asking too much of her.
