McCain/Huckabee Derangement Syndrome

Well, this – if it’s true – is going to make my decision to not vote for McCain very easy:

U.S. News James Pethokoukis reports that a McCain fundraiser has learned that Mike Huckabee is at the top of McCains list of potential running mates.
Huckabee For VP? – Real Clear Politics – Elections 2008 – TIME

It’s not just Pastor Holiday Inn Express’s long history of foreign policy gaffes. It’s not just that he’s another New Coke Republican. It’s not all the facts Fred Thompson laid out in this very damning case against him, or these two additional cases. It’s not even the push polling.

His claim to the title of “Christian leader” in his campaign ads was nauseating, especially given his dishonest, sneaky, unChristian statements*. I could choke down the necessity of voting for McCain, given the right circumstances. But I will not ever, under any circumstance, do anything to promote the career of the man who attempts to speak for me, as a Christian, in politics – and who does so in the most sly, disingenuous manner possible. He is not and never will be my leader; I cannot reject him more emphatically.

And the combination of these two men is simply unbearable.

It’s time to republish this January post:

McCain/Huckabee Derangement Syndrome
The new catch phrases seem to be McCain Derangement Syndrome and Huckabee Derangement Syndrome. There’s just one problem with that. If what you’re saying is objectively, demonstrably true then you’re not deranged.

  • McCain really is anti-free speech. His McCain-Feingold legislation proves that.
  • McCain really is anti-conservative judges. His Gang of 14 record proves that.
  • McCain really does believe that the government should do something to stop the “global warming crisis.” He’s sponsored legislation for that.
  • McCain really does want open borders. His Shamnesty record proves that.
  • Huckabee really is a sneaky hypocrite. His passivity in the face of push polling and his “innocent” questions about Mormonism prove that.
  • Huckabee really is in favor of bigger government. His Arkansas history of government growth proves that.
  • Huckabee really is in favor of spending tax dollars on illegals. His statements on proposed illegal immigration legislation in Arkansas prove that.
  • Huckabee really is clueless on foreign policy. His Pakistan statements and Foreign Affairs article prove that.

It is NOT deranged to say that these men are not conservatives. It’s deranged to say that they are.

* From this post:

After his little Jesus/Satan “question” he exposed himself for exactly what he is – a typical politician who will do anything to gain power, including abuse the faith he supposedly holds so dear. And let’s be clear about the Jesus/Satan/Mormon thing – I don’t give a crap if that is what Mormons or what Romney believe. Today’s evangelicals would disqualify Thomas Jefferson on a faith basis. Most of them have NO FREAKING IDEA what the Jefferson Bible is. No, what enrages me about Huckabee’s “question” is that he damn well knew the answer before he asked it. He takes us for fools. And sadly, too many people ARE.

  1. Drew says:

He was just using Huckabee to defeat his rivals during the primary. I don’t think he’d be dumb enough to choose him for a running mate.

    From your lips to God’s ear… :-)

    Amen to that.

If McCain chooses Huckabee he’s an idiot. There are more people that he would lose in the middle to just gain a few mod-conservative Christians. Maybe McCain doesn’t really want it, or maybe the TriLat Comm. or others in charge, tell him that Obama must be POSTUS. He would win if he chose a young, conservative minority like Michael Steele or Bobby Jindal.
