No, not James Bond, Tom Cruise and a bungee cord.

You're killing me, brah.

I don’t blame New Orleans city officials for thinking New Orleanians are stupid. After all, they tolerate a level of incompetence and corruption rarely seen outside of Chicago and a level of stupidity you’d otherwise have to go to quickly-collapsing California to see. But this is really breathtaking:

New Orleans interim technology chief Harrison Boyd wants us to think that the city contractors who allege that someone with high-level access intentionally destroyed Mayor Ray Nagin’s e-mail messages are fantasizing.

“James Bond, Tom Cruise and a bungee cord didn’t come down to the city and somehow delete [22GB of] information from our system,” Boyd said at a Friday press conference.

Mr. Boyd, a facile dismissal is really not going to cut it.  I assure you nobody’s entertaining the idea that some outside force did this.  It’s an exceedingly safe bet that it was done by a low level city employee who was told to do it; no bungee cords required.  People have a pretty good idea on the deplorable IT condition of the City of New Orleans.  Half – or more – the computers in city offices are running unlicensed (and outdated) software; just ask any contractor who’s done work in city offices – and that’s just the tip of NOLA’s IT iceberg.   More on the scandal here.
