Putting Our Money Where Our Mouth Is – Blogger Challenge

[Bumped: added new links to donate to build the fence, get more information about the fence and added trackbacks to the body of the post. Also, the Senate approved about 300 miles of fence, there's still a lot of ground to cover and it's unlikely the government will do it. A recent Fox News study revealed that people would be glad to pay an extra $100 in taxes if it were used to build a fence. If you agree, here's your chance to do your part.]

One of the things that has infuriated me from the beginning of this debate is the false choice that is repeatedly presented. Amnesty/guest worker vs. Mass deporations. This is obviously not true, and I’d like to take the opportunity to remind everyone that the choices to slow illegal immigration are not Government action vs. Giving up. Bush has firmly aligned himself with the open borders advocates. This should surprise no one. It’s consistent with his record. Much of the Senate, for whatever reason, agrees with him. The House, being up for election three times as often as the Senate is, is more responsive to voter opinion. So by all means, continue to lobby your elected officials, and try to sway public opinion on this issue. But it’s also time to start taking real action. Can we afford to wait for the government to act?

minutemandonation.gifThe Minutemen have already started fence building on private property. Support them. I just donated $50. That is equivalent to two nights of pizza at my house. The next two times my family might have ordered pizza, I’ll make spaghetti instead. I challenge every anti-illegal immigration blogger to examine their lifestyle and budget and find what can be cut in order to donate to the Minutemen. If, every time you wrote a post on illegal immigration, you put a quarter, fifty cents, or a dollar into a jar next to your computer, you’d have $10 or $20 bucks to donate before long. What if, every time you make a donation, you posted about it, printed it out, sent a copy to the GOP and your elected officials?

Right now it’s all sound and fury, signifying nothing. Prove you’re serious. Prove that slowing illegal immigration is the serious matter we all claim it is. If you really believe that the future of the country hinges on it, then you can make a choice now to sacrifice some luxuries in your daily life. Talk is cheap, but this fence is apparently only going be built by donations. If you don’t put your money where your mouth is, well, then… what does that say about your priorities?

If you decide to take the challenge, trackback or comment to let me know. I’ll be adding trackback links to the body of the post.
