No, not in Afghanistan… though, maybe a de facto surrender, just keeping up appearances by not pulling out troops, but refusing to give McChrystal what he needs to win. Worst of all possible worlds, that, because we still lose but more troops are killed. The media is already ratcheting up the “quagmire” talk and in a year or so we’ll finally march out, over the dead bodies of soldiers whose lives Obama could have spared if he’d make a freaking decision to stay in and do this thing or get out, already.
But I digress.
Retreat, in the sense that I’m going to one for my church. It’s actually for the twenty-somethings group; my husband and I are going to serve. So just when I was getting back into blogging regularly, I have to write the same old phrase. Posting will be light. I have no idea if the retreat center has accessible internet or if our air card will be able to connect. This place is out in the boonies.
You can keep yourselves busy and out of trouble by visiting the following fine blogging establishments. You’ll find linky goodness about Catholic persecution in Canada at Wintery Knight, who kindly linked to my Chai Feldblum post. Speaking of Chai Feldblum and the EEOC, although she’s not confirmed, the “conscience clause” attacks have already started. Who couldn’t see that coming? Oh, right… Kathleen Parker, Chris Buckley, Peggy Noonan, David “Pearl Clutcher” Brooks…. morons.
Foxfier does a little comparing and contrasting at Head Noises.
And this… this is heartbreaking. As is the violence which is abortion. But the worst (to me) is this post on Fort Carson’s heroes. I think – half prayer and half curse against the government – my God, my GOD, my son in law is being deployed in January and this is how our government will treat him. He’s actually being deployed to Iraq, but resources are being moved to Afghanistan, so there’s a chance – I don’t know how big – he’ll eventually go there. After the lessons of Iraq, President Obama still sees fit to treat our military this way. But then, the left didn’t want to win in Iraq, they just wanted to rail against President Bush. Excuse me, I mean, “Chimperor Bushitler.” Someday I’ll do a post using the exact same names the left routinely used about Bush, against Obama. And be called a racist for my trouble.
This is how our government expects the troops to fight:
Stephan Mace of the Army’s 61st Cavalry Regiment knew the Taliban would be waiting for him when he returned to eastern Afghanistan in September.
During a two-week leave in early September, the 21-year-old specialist sat on his father’s couch in Winchester, Virginia, and discussed his concerns over Forward Operating Base Keating in Kamdesh District, a region known as a Taliban stronghold.
“He talked about the village next to the base, that it had 300 Taliban, and they couldn’t do anything about it because they were in mosques hiding or with other civilians,” says his father, Larry Mace.
“They knew they were there and they couldn’t do anything about it and they killed them.”
It is beyond stupid to adhere to Marquis of Queensbury rules when the other guy brings brass knuckles, a knife, and a bunch of friends. Especially when fighting an honor/shame-based culture which respects strength above all. We have an all-volunteer army, and NO, it is NOT full of poverty-stricken minorities who had no real options but to enlist. Soldiers take a soldier’s chance and I understand that, but for pity’s sake don’t hamstring them like this. It’s a disgrace. Morale is suffering? Quelle suprise. More on the siege here.
The Anchoress wonders, Does Obama know who we are? I wonder, does he care? The question has been asked, if Obama hated America, what would he do differently? The first time I heard the question, I thought it was a bit… excessive. Now, not so much.
Well.. although I’m going to serve, I will still have time for prayer and devotions and all things considered, this retreat is very timely.
