So now there’s talk about the Democrats’ introducing another amnesty bill. If so, they’ll probably have the assistance of some of the usual suspects, like John McCain and Lindsay Grahamnesty. But part of me wishes Obama would go ahead with it. Practically speaking, there’s an unfortunate reality in politics that prevents any one politician from going too far all at once. Our society just doesn’t like revolution. And moreover, we glorify the liberty to voice dissenting views. Despite the inroads made by tyrants in recent decades, America remains a nation with certain checks and balances. So with that said, I think adding another controversial task to his load would probably cripple Obama.
Right now, Obama is in the process of pushing through Congress two fairly unpopular items — 1) the socialized medicine bill, and 2) the global warming tax. He’s already passed an unpopular “stimulus” (i.e., spending) bill and nationalized several companies. Meanwhile, the economy remains stagnant. “Hope” and “change” have turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment so far. In fact, the reason this birth certificate controversy has finally begun receiving airtime is because people are growing disenchanted. At least in the back of their minds, some Americans are thinking, Boy, I hope he was born in Kenya so we don’t have to put up with three more years of him. So while people might not accept the conspiracy theory, they at least have become slower to laugh it off.
Considering the sinking Obama presidency, part of me hopes that he proposes another amnesty bill. Plenty of Democrats don’t like the idea. Moreover, Obama is simply trying to do too much at once. It’s almost like he knows that his economic policies will continue to harm the economy – and has therefore abandoned the idea of a two-term presidency. He knows that the popularity which brought him to power came from unfulfillable rhetoric. And as a result, he knows that he has to cram through Congress as much garbage as possible before more people lose their sense of wonder. Obama truly is not acting pragmatically.
That said, any amnesty bill would likely fail. And if it did, that failure would be the nail in Obama’s coffin. George W. Bush couldn’t even pass an amnesty bill using bipartisan measures during a time of economic growth. Do we seriously think the partisan Democrats can get one passed when people are unemployed? Can they possibly gain traction with another dumb idea amidst the socialized medicine battle and the ongoing mission to destroy American industry via global warming laws?
Bush torpedoed his career with his foolish amnesty bill. Let’s have another round!
Of course, if amnesty passed, I guess we’d be in trouble. But even if that were the case, conservatives would at least sweep the 2010 elections.
