I’ve gotten so spoiled with a 5mb cable connection that I forgot how it feels to use dial up. But I noticed my blog was slow, even with a high speed connection, so when I searched the WordPress forums for a solution, I found this:
Web Page Analyzer – Free web page analysis tool calculates page size, composition, and download time. Gives speed recommendations based on best practices for usability, HCI, and website optimization.
By taking the advice in the free report, I fine-tuned quite a lot; most noticeably the boxes on the left which are not as fancy but load considerably faster. I brought the estimated speed for a 56k user from 31.74 seconds down to 15.44. That’s still slower than it ought to be – 10 seconds or less is my rule for commercial sites unless the client insists that he HAS to have certain items and doesn’t care how long it takes. But it’s a great improvement. Check it out for your own blog and see how to speed up your blog.
