Dana at Principled Discovery has this week’s Carnival of Homeschooling, which is a veritable feast of posts on all things homeschooling. Drop by and fill up your plate!
I seldom post on it, but we homeschool my 16 year old daughter. She has at various times attended public school, private school and parochial school, but this has turned out to be the best thing for her. She has learned personal responsibility and how to motivate herself in a way that I didn’t learn until college. My biggest fear, before we took the plunge to do this, was that I would have to nag her daily to do her schoolwork and that our relationship would suffer. We agreed that if that was what it came to, back to “real” school she would go. It has not been a problem. She uses the Abeka video curriculum and her daily routine is a vast improvement over her old school hours. There is ample time for rest, for education, for leisure and just hanging out with her friends. And her test scores are phenomenal. A scholarship will be no problem.
Homeschooling will not work for everyone, but if you’ve got an exhausted teenager who hates school, whose grades are not as good as they could be, who doesn’t have much time with the family or friends because homework takes so long to do, you should at least consider homeschooling. Colleges are recruiting homeschoolers these days, and depending on what program you use, you can have report cards, a transcript, and a diploma. This week’s carnival is a great place to get an overall picture of what homeschooling is like.

Thanks for the link! And that is awesome that you were able to make that decision for your teenage daughter. Patricia Anne’s Pollywog Creek Porch had a nice entry on a similar subject…how our teenagers still need us. I believe it was one of the desserts.
I’m still working my way through, but I’ll get to that post eventually.
