Don’t let it hit you on the way out. His replacement? A 41 year old Republican Vietnamese-American (the first in Congress).
Cao came to the United States as a child after the fall of Saigon in 1975 and went on to earn degrees in philosophy, physics and law.
As the Times-Pic put it,
This was a victory for those who printed signs asking voters to Stop $ Bill and End the Embarrassment and the doorknockers asking whether people are tired of Bill Jefferson’s scandals.
Sadly, Cao’s an immigration lawyer, which bodes ill for those of us who oppose the upcoming shamnesty. But still, the fact that New Orleans has finally shed herself of Mr. Jefferson is a wonderful development. May it portend a great change in our long, sad political history, although the fact that the election was so close is certainly disheartening.
Times are not good here. The city is crumbling into ashes. It has been buried under a lava flood of taxes and frauds and maladministrations so that it has become only a study for archaeologists. …But it is better to live here in sackcloth and ashes, than to own the whole state of Ohio. – Lafcadio Hearn, 1879

I’m liking that his name is actually Anh but he goes by Joseph– bodes well for him wanting to fix *legal* immigration. (which can’t happen a moment too soon)
