Zero tolerance? Students expelled in laxative cupcake caper

I can’t really work up any outrage for this, because frankly I think it’s funny and no harm was done. Students expelled in laxative cupcake caper –

A pair of high school seniors are fighting expulsion and criminal charges after officials at their Metairie school discovered their “senior prank:” a pan of laxative-laced cupcakes left in the teachers lounge.

… Officials determined that seniors Jeannie Nguyen, 17, of Kenner, and Kamrin Kennedy, 17, of Marrero, cooked up the scheme, the police report said. They were booked with mingling harmful substances, punishable by up to two years in prison and a maximum fine of $1,000.

When I was a freshman in high school, a girl added some acid to my friend’s coconut cream pie. Becky and her family would have had quite a trip had the word not gotten out. That incident was both illegal and potentially quite harmful. But the girl was only suspended for two weeks. I’m sure the teachers don’t find this amusing, and are probably fearful that next time it could be acid, or worse… but I still can’t work up any outrage over the incident.   I think they ought to get off with a stern slap on the wrist and some unpleasant community service.
